Social Work Awards

Social Worker of the Year Awards logoSanctuary Social Care is proud to sponsor the Social Worker of the Year Awards.

These awards showcase the best work in our sector and help to improve the national reputation of social workers.

The Social Worker of the Year Awards were established in 2006 by independent social worker Beverley Williams, who wanted to increase the recognition of the challenging work of social workers and celebrate their achievements and good practice.

The key aims of the awards are to:
  • Give recognition to the challenging work of qualified social workers
  • Promote best practice in the profession and celebrate success
  • Improve understanding of the range of work which social workers undertake
  • Celebrate and promote diversity and equal opportunities in social care

Categories are designed to recognise good practice at all levels from newly qualified social workers, to team leaders and employers, as well as the achievements of teams in both children’s and adult services.

In 2010, Sanctuary Social Care helped create a registered charity to run the awards and assembled a board of directors representing the social work profession – these currently include Beverley Williams (awards founder), James Rook (MD, Sanctuary Personnel), Ruth Smith (Editor, and Professor Ray Jones (as chair).

This helped build the stature of the awards, which now attract high profile judges from the social work sector including, in 2013, both chief social workers for England, Isabelle Trowler and Lyn Romeo. And as the awards become better known, the number of entries is growing every year – highlighting even more great practice from around the country.
