Last week (Friday 28th November), saw the awards presentation for the annual Social Worker of the Year Awards take place. Sanctuary is extremely proud to have witnessed such an incredible celebration of social work – it was clear that there is some incredible work taking place throughout the country and that social workers are making a vital difference to the lives of vulnerable adults and children.

As headline sponsors, Sanctuary is thrilled to see the impact of the awards, which have become the leading celebration of social work in England. Joining guests for the first time this year was the Rt. Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education, who welcomed guests to the event. During her keynote speech, she stated that “it's hard to find a more well meaning and important job than social work.”

The 2014 awards ceremony saw more than 350 people celebrate the social work profession, and further speeches were made by Isabelle Trowler (Chief Social Worker – Children and Families), Annie Hudson (CEO, TCSW) and Bridget Robb (CEO, BASW). There was also an exclusive video message from Norman Lamb, Minister of State for Care and Support, who once again described the event as the ‘highlight of the social care calendar’.

Winning the top award on the night was Zahraa Adams, a Newly Qualified Children’s Social Worker from Essex County Council. She received the award for the ‘Overall Social Worker of the Year’ after triumphing in the newly qualified children’s social worker category – for more information about why the judges described her as an ‘inspiration to us all’, or to watch video testimonials from the judging panels, simply visit the social work awards website.

Speaking about the awards, James Rook, Managing Director, Sanctuary Social Care said: “It is an honour to be involved with these Awards and to have the opportunity to read the numerous examples of excellent practice which demonstrate the exceptional lengths that so many social workers are prepared to go to. The awards presentation on Friday night was a fantastic celebration of social work and I hope that all those who attended the event enjoyed it as much as I did.”

This is the fifth year that Sanctuary has been the headline sponsor of the awards, and we believe that they are playing a huge role in improving the reputation and understanding of the social work profession. We hope that the awards will continue to grow and that social workers feel proud and confident in what they do.
