Our expert panel have been answering your social work related questions.

Q: “As an experienced social worker (not presently practising), how can I get back into the profession?”
Jolyon, Cardigan

If you are still on the register, you are free to ‘pass on your knowledge, skills and experience’ as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This type of CPD is commonly referred to as Work-based learning and / or Professional activity. It is important to understand what we mean by practising. We have defined ‘practising your profession’ as drawing on your professional skills and knowledge in the course of your work. This does not have to be in clinical or ‘frontline’ practice and can include roles in education, management and research, or other areas.

Examples of CPD activity can be found on our the CPD section of our website

With regards to returning to practice, if you have been out of practice for two years or more you will need to complete a period of updating your skills and knowledge before you can apply for readmission to the HCPC Register. This can be made up of any combination of supervised practice; formal study; or private study.

Full details of the requirements for returning to practice can be found in our recently revised guidance, which is available to download on our website. If you would like further information of advice on returning to practice, you can email the Registrations Department or speak to an adviser on 0300 500 4472.
