Designed to reduce the pressure on the NHS, temporary measures have been taken to remove the restrictions on nurse recruitment from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). 




Nurses will be added to the government’s Shortage Occupation List, prioritising applications from outside the European Economic Area, whilst the Migration Advisory Committee reviews the change.

The move means nurses are now one of the professions that can be granted unlimited numbers of standard visas, provided they have the backing of an employer in the UK.
 
It has been announced by the government as a way of easing the ‘pressure on the NHS at a time when the government is introducing tough new controls on costly agency spending’.
 
As of today (19 October 2015) it is compulsory for all agency staff employed by NHS trusts in England to be hired by an NHS approved national framework. The same rules will apply to those arriving from overseas to work as agency staff in NHS trusts in England.
 
Maintaining safe staffing levels remains a top priority for the government. Health Education England has reportedly increased its number of nurse training places by 14% over 2 years, and it expects around 23,000 more nurses will be in place by 2019. Meanwhile, emphasis is also being placed on encouraging those who’ve left nursing to return to the profession.
