We all know how frustrating it can be sitting in traffic, let alone if you are a social worker needing to make an urgent visit to a family or a meeting with another agency! So, we’ve sifted through some of the most useful travel apps that might just help you get around that much easier.

These apps range from aiding you with public transport services to the little things such as car park locators if you end up in a busy city centre!

Citymapper

This app was built for those constantly on the go. The app is a journey planner you can use with buses, tubes, cars, ferry and even just walking! It provides simple A – B directions that are commonly taken by other users of the app with live/real-time routing that updates every minute to ensure you get to your destination as quick as possible by avoiding as much traffic, roadworks and general delays as possible. How it works, is by all users sending in updates on any anticipated route delays!

Google Maps

Everyone has heard of google maps. It is the go to app when you need directions and there is a reason why. The app provides real-time GPS navigation for phone, tablet and desktop on traffic and travel. It supplies constant updates in journey times to keep you aware of any delays due to road works, accidents and diversions.  Also, Google Maps provides travel information such as timings and distances for walking, driving, cycling and public transport.

AA Parking

This app helps you find the cheapest and most convenient car parking in the UK and Ireland. The app will show you all free and paid parking in your area through GPS or you can enter an address for it to scan. The app even provides you with directions to the entrances to the car park along with showing you how many spaces are free (this function is limited as not all car parks show availability). AA Parking also provides information on Park & Ride services in the area.

UK Bus Checker

At any of the UK’s 300,000 bus stops, you can get an instant, up-to-date arrival information for each bus through live GPS trackers in the buses. You have access to instant departure boards for every stop in the UK along with advice for practical and affordable routes, best suited for your journey. See exactly where each bus goes with their live, street level route maps. You can even use a draggable bus on the map to explore the route along with receiving alerts when you are coming up to your stop.

Trainline UK

Trainline gathers information from 86 train companies together onto one app to provide the best routes, times and fares, making it the world’s leading independent rail platform. You can even save money through buying tickets in advance through their app and having an eticket, which saves queuing and reduces the risk of losing your ticket!

Uber

With the tap of your screen, you can get a driver to pick you up from wherever you are and take you wherever you want to go. You can see the driver’s contact information so you know you are getting in the right car! With the pay & go nature of the service, you are automatically charged by card via the app so you never need to worry about cash! You can also share the cost of the journey with whoever you are travelling with if you have them as a contact on the app and check the fare for the journey via the in-app Fare estimate service!
