More than 150 social workers took part in Sanctuary Social Care’s online discussion last night (19 August), which focused on the need to carry out regular continuing professional development (CPD) activities.

The event proved to be a timely resource ahead of the deadline (by 1 December 2014) for social workers to renew their registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which also involves meeting a set of CPD standards.

The two-hour live discussion (replay), which gave social workers the opportunity to log on from their home computers, saw just short of 200 questions put forward to a panel of experts arranged by Sanctuary.

Key recurring themes included 'what counts as a CPD activity?', 'what evidence needs to be provided?', 'what happens if I've taken a career gap?' and 'how do I need to present my CPD portfolio?' The event also gave practitioners the chance to share their tips and advice on activities they have carried out with fellow professionals and explain how they have been able to put their learning into practice. As a result, the session can count as a CPD activity.

Speaking about the event, Craig Davis, Head of Social Work, said: "It was a busy session but it was really interesting to speak to so many people about CPD and the upcoming registration renewal. There were a lot of questions coming through and it was clear that many social workers were worried about what they needed to do. It was great to hear from their feedback that they are now feeling much more confident and prepared for the registration renewal.

"We will be hosting another online session focusing on CPD in October, and I would like to thank our panellists who provided such valuable answers to so many questions."

Sanctuary Social Care has been overwhelmed by the positive feedback received from nearly 100 participants, including:

"It was eye opening and gave me a lot of thought about my every day work and how my practices are helping my both personal and professional development."

Hospital Social Worker

"It was helpful to dispel some of the anxieties and look at ways to manage recording CPD - which no doubt for most people is a process we engage in unconsciously as part of our own practices every day."

Independent Social Worker

"The online discussion was very helpful and eye-opening as many of the questions I had were also addressed during this discussion. I feel this discussion will contribute positively to my CPD in the future."

Nyarai, Social Worker

"The CPD online discussion was brilliant. It was a welcome forum to give social workers the opportunity to discuss and share their concerns and experiences regarding CPD activities."

Care Management Officer

I have always thought that Sanctuary Social Care is a very professional business, this proves that they care about how social workers can continue with support from people that count.

Della Holliday, Social Worker (Active Intervention and Safeguarding)

"Sanctuary is the place for continued development in the health and social care profession."

Social Worker (Adults)
