One of the benefits of working as a locum nurse or allied health professional is the flexibility of being able to work in different locations and sometimes this involves a stay away from home during the week at a hotel.

In the last of our series of money saving advice blogs, which have so far focused on reducing rail fares and limiting motoring costs, we look at how you can make savings on your accommodation costs.

Look at comparison sites to get the best deal

Whether you are starting a new radiography job, or taking part in a week-long training conference, the first thing you will need to do is arrange your accommodation. Once you know the area you are looking for, we would recommend looking at comparison sites to help you find the best possible price for your hotel. Sites such as Trivago and TravelSupermarket will look at a wide variety of selling brokers and you may find that rates for the same hotel may vary widely.

Top Tip! Once you’ve found your best possible deal, don’t be afraid to phone your hotel directly – they may be able to match the price and throw in some extras such as breakfast for free.

Use cash back sites

If you’ve read our previous money advice blogs you’ll have noticed that we keep mentioning cash back sites such as Quidco or TopCashBack. These sites are ideal for booking accommodation as they can offer great cash back rates (sometimes as much as 12-15%) helping you to stretch your money much further.

Occasionally they may be able to offer discounted rates in addition to the advertised cash back, just be sure to check the terms and conditions – if you use any additional promotional codes when you book, it could invalidate the cash back claim.

Sign up with reward schemes

If you frequently stay in hotels for business, make sure you sign up for their reward schemes and newsletters which are designed to reward frequent guests. You may find that you will be sent exclusive promotional voucher codes, or you can accumulate reward points which can be saved for future bargains.

Consider top secret hotels

If you know an area where you would like to stay but you’re relaxed about the specific hotel, why not try a top-secret hotel? You will be given full details about the facilities and location but the name will only be revealed after booking.

This is a great way of benefitting from 5* accommodation at 3* prices as prices are often significantly cheaper but bookings tend to be non-refundable, so if you are keen to stay in a particular hotel this may not be the best option.
