In the most recent edition of Sanctuary Social Work News magazine, we catch up with social worker, qualified counsellor, and adolescent mental health trainer, Yvonne Tyree.

Explaining exactly why there is a need to understand a young person’s perspective in order to support them with positive coping strategies, Yvonne reflects on her own rebellious teenage years as she became immersed in the punk subculture. Jumping forward several years, she considers what has changed for young people?

For Yvonne, understanding and improving awareness of a young person’s perspective is crucial – only then are social workers able to devise practical ideas that can really help young people cope with adolescence, which for some can be an extremely complex and difficult time in their life.

With exploring positive coping strategies for adolescents at the heart of Yvonne’s course offered through Sanctuary Training, her article explores how social workers can help young people with poor mental health gain the emotional strength to move forward.
