A high profile mental health campaign launched by the Royal Foundation has drawn attention to the impact of mental health issues amongst some of the UK’s top sports stars.

Over the weekend, Prince Harry hosted an informal barbeque where he met with a number of sports stars including former England defender Rio Ferdinand, and Olympic medallists Victoria Pendleton, Dame Kelly Homes and Iwan Thomas. Held as part of his work with the Heads Together campaign, (the mental health charity launched by the Prince alongside the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge), the event was designed to raise awareness of the fact that anyone can suffer from mental health issues, no matter what achievements they may have accomplished.

During the event, Dame Kelly Holmes spoke about how she had depression throughout her athletics career, whilst Rio Ferdinand spoke with the Prince about how young people deal with the death of a parent – a cause close to his heart after the death of his wife from cancer last year.

Since the launch of the Heads Together campaign earlier this year,  Prince Harry has been working incredibly hard alongside the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to change the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The trio have pledged to change the national conversation around mental health and in doing so, are using the campaign to highlight the resources available to support those in need by bringing together eight different mental health charities.

We are closely following the Heads Together campaign with interest; by bringing national attention to mental health issues, the campaign is highlighting the growing need for additional investment into mental health services across the UK.

More information about the Heads Together campaign can be found at headstogether.org.uk or in our previous blog.

We would love to know what you think about Prince Harry’s involvement in the campaign. Tweet us @SanctuaryMH with your thoughts.
