This year, all occupational therapists are required to renew their registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) by 31 October 2017 at 6 pm, with renewal opening Tuesday, 1 August 2017.

If you decide to renew using a paper renewal form, remember that it will take up to 10 days for the paper to be printed and mailed to your residence since it cannot be sent via email.

What’s new from the HCPC?

The HCPC published an updated guide on ‘Continuing professional development and your registration,’ and you can look at it here. Some of our resources that we discuss below can help you as well.

Besides this, the HCPC also released a revised ‘Standards of education and training (SETs) and guidance,’ in June. This applies to you because only education and training programmes that meet these standards can count towards your continuing professional development.

Therefore, it is important to verify that the training/education you are pursuing meets the HCPC’s standards. The revised SETs will begin implementation in September 2017 and you can look at them here.

We can help you organise your CPD log

To assist you in organising your CPD activity, we have created a downloadable guide on preparing your profile that includes a supporting activity log.

Three benefits of using our guide:

1) It offers you 5 useful tips for formulating your CPD profile

As a busy Occupational Therapist, we understand the value in being able to simplify the CPD process and offer some quick tips on how to quicken the process without compromising the quality of your CPD.

2) It gives you a format to organise your activity

All your professional development activities should be organised in date order. Our guide provides you with a format to aid you in organising it. You also want to make sure you deliver explanations for breaks in your work.

3) It discusses a variety of activity examples for you to reflect on

You want to provide a broad variation of examples (4 to 6) of work that you have done and apply them back to the standards of proficiency. That way, you can be sure that the information you provide is relevant to the CPD and that your renewal goes smoothly.

You also want to make sure that you offer evidence for your work. This may include case conferences and other methods of review; proof of training, presentations, or evidence of research and conclusions.

We also have online training available that you can incorporate into your CPD activity.

Activities that increase knowledge and awareness in a field stand out in CPD. Although we are working to add more classroom-based courses for specific fields, we have online training courses that are skills-based, low-priced and easily accessible and manageable.

We went through our courses and found five that we feel would be beneficial for those who work in occupational therapy jobs and are related to the HCPC standards of proficiency.

These courses include:

Manual Handling – Health, Education and Social Care (£12.00 including VAT)
Equality and Diversity – for Health and Social Care (£12.00 including VAT)
Handling Information – for Health and Social Care (£12.00 including VAT)
Fluids and Nutrition – for Health and Social Care (£18.00 including VAT)
Effective Communication – for Health and Social Care (£12.00 including VAT)

We also have many other courses as well and occasionally we offer special courses so keep checking Sanctuary Training to stay updated.
